MEANING IN THE MADD [18:77] You know those stretches in the Qur'an – the madd – where the words are drawn out for up to six counts? They’re not just there for beauty; they carry profound meaning too. One striking example of this is in Surah Al-Kahf, found in the story of Prophet Musa and Al-Khidr. Listen carefully فَٱنطَلَقَا حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَيَآ أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ أَهْلَهَا فَأَبَوْا۟ أَن يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا [18:77] Let’s break it down: First is فَٱنطَلَقَا – “they set out.” The Ghunnah in the noon (ن) shows the preparation before setting, followed by the plosive ط gives a sense of energy and zeal, like the excitement at the start of a journey. This is followed by: حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَتَيَآ أَهْلَ قَرْيَةٍ These three drawn-out syllables give you the sense of a long, exhausting journey. You really feel the passage of time. It’s like me saying, “untiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill theeeeeeeeeeeeeey caaaaaaaaaaame to the people of a town.” You can almost feel the weariness in the words as they stretch on and on. Then comes: ٱسْتَطْعَمَآ أَهْلَهَا Now they’ve arrived, and they go around asking for food. And again, the madd stretches the feeling of their endless search. “They aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasked them for food...” It drags on, just like their quest, going from one person to the next. And ٱسْتَطْعَمَا really gives the fealing of difficulty And then, فَأَبَوْا۟ أَن يُضَيِّفُوهُمَا They refused to feed them. It’s short, sharp, and to the point – like the door slamming in their faces. Even the smallest bit of food was denied. Now, contrast this with the sound of the favour they did for the town: يَنقَضَّ فَأَقَامَهُۥ Allah describes the broken wall they fixed with two heavy letters right next to each other: the Qaaf and the Daad – يَنقَضَّ. This creates a sharp, forceful sound, contrasting the difficulty of their task with the stinginess they faced earlier. And the Alif in فَأَقَامَهُۥ gives a sense of elevation, reflecting the renovation undergone rebuilding the wall. You can almost feel Prophet Musa’s (AS) frustration as he recalls, "Why didn’t we ask for payment after we did the work for them?" Each sound in this verse carries not just meaning, but an experience. You live through the journey with Prophet Musa (AS) and Al-Khidr. You feel their frustration, their weariness, and their astonishment. The Qur'an doesn't just convey its meaning through the words; it envelops you in the journey itself through sound. The stretches show the passage of time with the difficulty they endured, and the heavy letters convey the weight of their task. This is the beauty of the Qur'an: the meaning isn’t confined to the words themselves, but in every aspect of how they are recited, how the sounds move, and how the rhythm flows.
