Caution: Donkeys may cause delays (and emotional attachment) The Wildlife Loop in Custer State Park is a MUST DO while in South Dakota. This 18 mile loop often takes you past bison herds, antelope, mountain goats, prairie dogs, big horn sheep and more! Typically you should not feed wildlife but in this state park you are allowed to feed the donkeys. This is because they’re semi-domesticated and have a long history of being fed by visitors. They will eat both apples and carrots but it was clear carrots are their favorite. If you’re going just for the donkeys, they usually hang out near the Custer State Park Bison Center! I’d recommend taking this drive Early morning or late afternoon for the most active wildlife and fewer cars. Make sure to follow speed limit signs since there is a lot of wildlife crossing the road here! You will have to pay the $25 entry fee to enter Custer State Park but entry is valid for 7 days and it’s worth it since there’s so much else to do there like the Needles Highway scenic drive, swim in sylvan lake, and hike the cathedral spires trail. The Wildlife loop scenic drive takes most people 1.5-2 hours to complete. Have you taken this drive yet and would you be brave enough to feed wild donkeys from your car window??
