SMDI Consultants, Inc.

Organized in August 1984 in Metro Manila, Philippines, SMDI has built a solid foundation in the traffic engineering and transport planning profession, as well as in comprehensive development planning and urban development. Today, SMDI is an established and dynamic consultancy firm with a string of major accomplishments, backed by its pool of experienced urban transport and environmental planners, traffic engineers and simulation specialists.

SMDI is an active member of the Council of Engineering Consultants of the Philippines (CECOPHIL) since 1989. Through its affiliation with its local and global network of consultancy firms from the Philippines, Japan, U.S.A, U.K. and Germany, SMDI has been involved in significant major projects for the Philippine government and the private sector. These projects have been funded by the Philippine government, in cooperation with leading international organizations/institutions, particularly Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), International Engineering Consulting Firms Association (IECA), International Association of Traffic & Safety Sciences (IATSS), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank. Its private sector projects consist of major developments of land developers, infrastructure companies, healthcare/educational institutions and commercial/industrial corporations, to name a few: Ayala Land, Belle Corporation, Eton Properties, Federal Land, Filinvest, Geoestate Solutions, Landco, Ortigas & Company, PhilRealty Holdings, Robinsons Land Corporation, Rockwell Land Corporation, Shangri-la Properties, SM Development Corporation, SM Investments Corporation, Sta. Lucia Realty, Walter Mart; Cavite Infrastructure Corporation (CIC), Manila North Tollways Corporation (MNTC); St. Luke’s Medical Center, UST Hospital; Ateneo de Manila University, Assumption College; and Carmelray.

Over the years, SMDI has compiled a broad and wide ranging track record in the very specialized fields of transportation and traffic, and regional and urban planning. These include the development of comprehensive traffic/transportation data base and planning methodologies and conduct of various specialized studies for roads, railways, ports, airports, public transportation (LRT/jeepneys/buses), and urban/rural/regional development projects, including their respective infrastructures. As can be gleaned from its inventory of projects, SMDI’s traffic engineering and planning studies have come up with sound traffic management plans, addressing such concerns as: infrastructure planning, traffic management and control facilities, traffic signals, parking facilities and operations, traffic circulation and access, geometric improvements of road sections and intersections, pedestrian demand and facilities, public transport loading/unloading facilities, intermodal linkages, parking demand and facilities.

In 1999, SMDI became the sole distributor in the Philippines of specialized traffic software products developed by PTV Group of Germany. The PTV Group provides software and consulting services for transport and logistics. Be it transport routes or structures, private or public transport - they plan and optimise everything which moves people and goods worldwide. The PTV package of softwares distributed by SMDI is a very useful and userfriendly tool for the evaluation of various alternatives based on transportation engineering and planning measures of effectiveness.
